On the first anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, I traveled to New York City to photograph the commemorative events at the World Trade Center site. Using a film SLR, I cautiously made photographs, ensuring that I not intrude upon anyone's grief. Therefore, these images are simple in their composition. Nonetheless, they are powerful, and I consider them the most consequential photographs I've ever taken in my nearly 50 years of making photographs.
